How to Stand Out in a Large Corporation

In large corporations it may be hard to shine and to stand out. Once you get your foot in the door, it may take awhile before you feel like part of the team. It will be easy to feel lost, unnoticed, and unappreciated. The best way to be noticed and to stand out is to do your job in an excellent and professional manner. Your base is going to be your office, so you will want to make sure that you create a space that will allow you to work efficiently.

One of the first things you will need to do is create an environment that you can be productive in. Take some time, even if you have to do it on your own time, to make your office a place that you can work efficiently from. Here are the ways that you can do that.

  • Arrange your furniture so that you can easily see and respond to people who enter your office. Have a clear path to your desk so that your office is welcoming to visitors.
  • Set up your desk so that it is comfortable. Have the chair and desk height so that you can comfortably perform you duties from it. Use ergonomically designed furniture whenever you can. Have the supplies you need easily accessible and make room for any equipment you will need to keep on your desk.
  • Take into account if you are right or left handed when positioning things like pens and the phone. You will need your writing hand free when you are on the phone.
  • Position lighting so that you can see your desk clearly without having to have the reflection of the light on your computer screen and so that you don’t have direct light into your eyes when you are working. Be sure there is light for anyone who will be working with you in your office space.
  • Set up your filing system. It should be easy for anyone else to figure out where you file things even in your absence. Have a place for files that you are currently working on and a place for files that you no longer are working on.
  • Keep your desk neat and orderly. When someone walks into your office and asks for a report, you should be able to immediately reach for it. Much time is wasted rummaging through piles of papers looking for an essential one. The few minutes it takes to regularly organize your desk will save you 10 times that amount of time.
  • Add a few personal items, but keep the office conservative and professional looking. Skip the pictures of you and your best friends at a bachelorette party and instead put the conservative vacation picture up. Plants are always a good addition to an office.

It won’t be enough to have a great office space to stand out in a corporation. You will also need to be very knowledgeable, proficient, and professional. Be sure you are doing your homework and learn everything you can. Learn about your job duties, the company, the goals of your department, etc. The more you know and the more efficient that you are, the sooner you will stand out in the crowd.

Don’t be known for your prickly personality. A friendly kind speaking employee will go farther and stand out more than a grumpy uncooperative employee. Get to know people in your area without getting too personal or sharing information that can be harmful if you are fortunate to start moving up in a company. Be patient because standing out in a corporation doesn’t happen overnight.
